To commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in February 2021, Comcast NBCUniversal employees and their families joined together for a virtual celebration and opportunity to participate in a first-of-its-kind mural project. In collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia and local artist Serena Saunders, 100 Comcast employees were each shipped a package with a paint-by-numbers canvas to paint and mail back for combining into a 10’ x 10’ mural.
The final installation, depicting the empowerment of Black women, is displayed at the Ralph J Roberts Boys & Girls Club, a Comcast Lift Zone, in the city’s Germantown neighborhood.
In the Making
Serena was chosen for her notable aesthetic of vibrant colors, nature, and growth. During the mural creation process, Serena layered in words submitted by Comcast employees to the prompt “What is your blueprint for growth?” which was inspired by Dr. King’s speech at a local South Philadelphia public high school.
